Dr. Bob Lawrence (00:00.566)
All right, welcome to Jazz Piano Skills, new month, new month, new tune. And this month's tune is a great one. Famous bossa nova by Antonio Carlos Yobeam, maybe the most popular bossa nova of all time, even before Girl From Ipanema. And I'm talking about "Wave". I'm gonna play it here shortly for you, but let me go down the line up here of our plan of attack for this month. Of course, we're gonna do a harmonic analysis this week where we look at the form of wave, which is unique form. We're going to look at the unique chord changes found within the tune. We're going look at the harmonic function of the tune. And of course, we're going to look at voicings always, right, with our harmonic analysis. We're going look at the block structures, traditional shells, contemporary shells, and contemporary two-handed structures.

Next week, we'll dive into a melodic analysis of the tune. We'll transcribe "Wave" using our ears, the melody and then we'll take a look at the phrases within the tune, the target notes within those phrases, fingerings as well. And of course, as we always do, we'll apply three different treatments to this classic standard.

And then two weeks from now, we'll do some improvisation development using the unique chord progressions that are found within wave. So it's a classic tune, one that we should be familiar with and one that we can gain a lot of benefit improving our jazz piano skills with studying this tune harmonically, melodically, and improvisationally. So let's take a listen to it.
